Healthy Skin, Healthy You

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. From the dermis to the epidermis, your skin provides protection and beauty from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.  Naturally, you want to take good care of your skin in return.

Your skin health has a close relationship with your full-body health. Healthy skin can help you keep your muscles, organs, and your appearance in top condition. Ensuring your outer layer is clean and glowing we start from the inside out.

Florida Skin Care Considerations

  • Sunshine
  • Ambient Humidity
  • Drying Ocean Winds

Living in Florida, our climate offers three primary skin care challenges.

First, there’s a lot of sun. Like, A LOT. We’re called the Sunshine State for a reason. In Florida we get an average of 250 clear, sunny days a year, and you can get a sunburn even on cloudy days. In the Spa, we frequently remind our regular clients and those new to the area, that the “near-equator sunshine” is intense. No doubt, your skin is going to need some sun protection from UVA and UVB rays alike.

Second, it’s humid. The marshy wetlands and the way plant-life grows to enormous size and density here combines with the oceanic weather system to trap a lot of humidity. Literal tons of water hanging in the air. Without a good breeze, sweat can linger on your skin. That means cleansing is important. The humidity is especially challenging for your skin in the summer when combined with serious heat.

Third, if you’re anywhere near the beach, the ocean generates a lot of wind. Despite the ambient humidity, that wind can be drying. Windy days and beach days mean protecting your skin from dryness.

Florida Skin Care Tips and Best Practices

Knowing what you know about the Florida climate, Massage & Wellness can help you build a skin care routine. Our Estheticians will keep you glowing and healthy despite the endless rays of sun and the alternating humid/drying conditions. For sessions focused on facial skin care and overall wellness consider a Spa Day.

1) Sunscreen for Every Occasion

Stock up on a variety of sunscreen types. For days at work and school, you want a lightweight zinc-based sunscreen that provides full spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, but doesn’t add a sticky mess to your face and shoulders. A foundation or moisturizer with sunscreen can be a great staple in your skin care supplies.

For days you go swimming, keep a heavy waterproof sunscreen and slather it on. You can shower off the chlorine/salt/sunscreen when your adventure is through.

Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every few hours, or before you head back outdoors.

2) Moisturizer and Hydrating Serums

Keep your skin moisturized, but choose light formulas that work for your unique complexion. Some prefer serums that pack a hefty blend of nutrients, while others prefer sealants like aloe-vera gel that help your skin maintain its natural moisture. Whatever you choose, apply as directed to provide ample protection from the sun and wind.

The key is to keep moisturized. Take advantage of your time spent indoors to apply moisturizer and let it absorb in the AC before you go outside to sweat again.

3) Treat Your Skin Before Bed

Make use of your time asleep. Do a full skin care routine with serums and moisturizer so that your skin enjoys maximum rejuvenation before your next outdoor adventure or sunny commute.

4) Barely-There Makeup In the Daytime

If you’re going to be out in the daytime, avoid heavy makeup. Choose minimal dramatic accents or a barely-there style that won’t melt or clog your pores when the heat and humidity become a factor. This is partly why Florida’s nightlife is so wild – it’s finally safe to dress up.

5) Freshen Up Throughout the Day

It’s OK to take care of your face all day. If you get sweaty, apply a cleanser or a rosewater and witch hazel toner to clear your pores and cool down. In the event your makeup runs, clean up and re-apply your daytime minimum. When you’re heading back into the sun, re-apply a layer of your daily SPF formula to stay safe and beautiful.

6) Rejuvenate with Skin Treatments

If you want to renew your skin’s glow and set yourself up for Florida skin care health, get a professional skin treatment at Massage & Wellness Spa. Skin treatments such as our Rejuvenating Facial provide a luxurious combination of exfoliation, nutrient infusion, and deep moisturization to help your skin achieve optimal health. Your skin care specialist can also provide tips on the best products for your daily routine, beach days, and special occasions to achieve the clearest, healthiest skin all year ’round.

Why Regular Skin Care Sessions are Beneficial

Skin care in Florida can be a challenge. The constant sunshine, heat, humidity, and drying winds can try even the best skin care routines. Fortunately, you don’t have to face Florida skin care alone.

Regular skin care sessions at your local spa can help you feel fresh and prepare your skin for long-term health in the Florida sun. You will get regular consultations on the best products for your skin, alongside the opportunity to feel pampered and unwind from your busy Florida lifestyle.

The Difference in “Light Types”

Sunlight is a crucial element for our well-being, yet excessive exposure to any sun, especially “Florida Sun”, can harm your skin. Beyond the well-known UVA and UVB, there’s also LED.

UVA rays possess a longer wavelength. These penetrate deep into the skin, reaching the Dermis. They are linked to premature aging, wrinkles, DNA damage, and skin cancer. Interestingly, UVA rays are strong enough to penetrate through clouds and windows.

UVB rays by comparison have a shorter wavelength. These are most likely to affect the upper layer of the skin, known as the Epidermis. Controlled exposure results in tanning. Excessive and unprotected exposure leads to sunburns and an elevated risk of skin cancer.

LED Red light therapy involves exposing your skin to a lamp, device, or laser emitting red light. Within your cells, are numerous structures and functions. Among those are mitochondria. These are often referred to as the “power generators”. LED light is absorbed by the mitochondria, prompting an increase in energy production. Some experts suggest that this process may aid in cellular repair and promote overall cell health. One of the benefits is the reduction of fine lines.
